Firmware 4.8.3 (build 7): security patches that install themselves
October 28, 2026
Build 7 is the public release for the Opal travel router. It ships one new idea and one small nicety, both aimed at the same thing: keeping you safe without you having to think about it.
Emergency security patches, applied for you
Routine updates still wait for you to press Download & install. That is on purpose — we do not want to surprise you. But when we fix a security vulnerability, waiting is not acceptable.
From build 7, a security update is flagged as an emergency patch. The moment your router sees one, it downloads the update in the background on its own, verifies it, and stages it. It is then installed the next time the router restarts for any reason — a power cut, an intentional reboot, anything. No action needed from you.
The safety checks have not changed: the download is still checked against its published checksum before it is ever installed, and the router re-checks it again at boot. The only thing we removed is the part where you had to remember to click.
A link to these notes, right on your router
Your router’s status page now shows a small What’s new notice that links to these release notes. It appears once per update and can be dismissed with one tap, so it is there when you want it and out of the way when you don’t.
Everything already in this build
- A read-only status page served from your own router — nothing here leaves your home.
- Phone hotspot and USB-tether support, with smart traffic shaping to keep calls smooth.
- Metered data tracking so you can see what each device used while your phone provided the internet.
- A hardened, key-only device with no vendor web interface.
